Here are some questions I get asked about voice acting.

  • I started as an on camera actress in my teens and then in my 20s I found out about voice acting actually through my wonderful mother who knew another Voice actress and told me that I should try it. I found that because it was a true craft on its own that I could not just jump into it. So I found a reputable voice to coach and started learning and found another teacher and another teacher and finally made my first crappy demo and got my agent and started auditioning, but that was probably 2 1/2 years after I started the process.

  • I’m a big believer and taking a class and joining the voice of a community because there’s so many great ones, but you can also show off your skills and talents on social media which didn’t exist when I started. So if you create and show your characters in your work and join in with different communities, one of them, I would recommend would be TikTok and Linkedin. You can learn from the those that are already working and model after them. There’s so many more avenues and there used to be but I still think taking at least one or two or three workshops just to get comfortable with Mike technique and learn the lingo is a valuable skill. Please reach out if you would like to coach privately

  • You certainly don’t need a degree but you want some kind of formal training from reputable coaches and teachers and workshops. For one thing it helps to bridge the divide of being far away from each other and there are so many online classes now that you can take that you can be anywhere in the world and connect to a wonderful Voice community.

  • I mentioned it earlier, but if you really have a desire in the skills, showcase your work showcase your characters showcase your comedic skills, your improv skills, and get noticed on social media. People get cast off of TikTok so it’s very different world.

  • If you have Animation, you’ve already created, you can have demo producers help you make it or you can have one build it from scratch with you but again one should be very thoughtful of who you spend your heart earned money with and take your time to make sure that you are ready, and the person that you are considering is well regarded in the community.

  • You do not need an agent to get work and more and more of it is now coming through pay to place sites where you upload your demos and have opportunities as well as being in Voice communities where people are sharing their castings to get the highest paid premium union work it does help to have an agent.

  • Nowadays, every voice is a special voice and the more unique it is with your own point of view and your own life experience the more you have opportunities. It’s changed very much from the old announcer voices and for the most part there is no such thing anymore. Every audition is unique and having an acting background is helpful in terms of authentic reads at the same time learning the technical skills to deliver clean audio. You do have to have your own studio, which is fairly easy to create now.
